Tennessee Tech defeats SIU-Edwardsville 78-65

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Kevin Murphy scored 20 points and had seven rebounds to lead Tennessee Tech to a 78-65 victory over SIU-Edwardsville on Wednesday night.

Zac Swansey added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists to help the Golden Eagles (1-3) win in their first home game of the season.

Tennessee Tech coach Mike Sutton earned his 130th career victory and is second in career wins at the school with a record of 130-120.

The Cougars (1-7) cut Tennessee Tech’s lead to 57-54 on Cornelius Chatt’s layup with 8:56 remaining, but the Golden Eagles quickly pushed their advantage to 65-56 on Kevin Murphy’s two free throws with 6:08 to play.

SIU-Edwardsville didn’t threaten after that.

The Cougars are in their first year in Division I and will participate in the Ohio Valley Conference next season.

Chatt finished with 22 points and Corey Wickware added 10 points.
