PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) — Dying wheat fields in Eastern Oregon are being investigated by agriculture researchers to find out what damaged more than 40,000 acres in Umatilla and Morrow counties.
The East Oregonian reports that Umatilla County growers noticed wheat fields turning yellow and dying early in November.
Sixteen fields northwest of Pendleton were affected.
In Morrow County, officials say more than 30,000 acres of wheat have plants with discolored yellow or purple tips that sometimes dry out.
Oregon Department of Agriculture and Oregon State University researchers say they don’t know yet if the problems in the two counties are related.
