SEATTLE (AP) — The man accused of gunning down a Seattle officer in a war on police appeared in King County Superior Court to learn the next step in his case would be a hearing May 20 to discuss a trial date.
Christopher Monfort took the occasion Friday to read out the names of people killed by police in Washington, to criticize the prosecutor and public defender, and to quote Thomas Paine saying silence is a kind of crime when it covers up the guilty.
The 42-year-old Monfort could face the death penalty if convicted of aggravated murder in the Halloween 2009 shooting of Officer Timothy Brenton. Monfort was wounded by police during his arrest about a week later in Tukwila. He is paralyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair.
