COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ryan Lochte missed out twice on his second victory at the American short-course championships.

The three-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist finished fourth in the 200 freestyle and seventh in the 100 backstroke a day after he won the 200 medley on Thursday.

Former Bulgarian Olympian Michael Alexandrov beat his own American record in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 51.35. His 2007 American best was of 51.56.

He swam for Bulgaria in the 2004 Olympics before becoming a U.S. citizen in 2006. He was allowed to compete for Bulgaria in the 2008 Olympics before he sat out of competition for a year to be eligible for the U.S team.

His former Northwestern teammate, Matt Grevers, set meet records in the 100 butterfly (45.07 seconds) and 100 backstroke (44.82).
