Talking Points 12/7

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

OK, BCS haters and Duck fans, here is your ultimate test.

It’s quite simple, really.

For the many who cannot stand the Bowl Championship Series and the way college football decides its ultimate champion, there is an easy solution: Don’t watch the games. Don’t go to the games.

It’s all about supply and demand.

Oh sure, the BCS folks hear from so many fans who complain year after year about the system. Yet why would the people in charge of college football want to change if the system makes so much money right now, if the TV ratings are so high, if the bowls — especially the championship game — are sold out?

Right now the demand is high for this system. Sure, we can theorize that a playoff would make more money. Common sense tells us it would be a huge success.

But as long as the BCS continues to make money, why make a change?

Strange, but true: All three service academies are going to bowl games this season, but not a one of them is playing in the Military Bowl. For some reason, East Carolina and Maryland are playing in that one.

Hey, here’s an idea: The winner gets the honor of joining the Army for a year, while the loser must join the Navy! (Can you tell the writer is a former soldier? Go Army!)
