American U. defeats Mount St. Mary’s (Md.) 69-64

EMMITSBURG, Md. (AP) — Vlad Moldoveanu scored 21 points on 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range and American University defeated Mount St. Mary’s (Md.) 69-64 on Monday night.

The Eagles (7-4) trailed 31-27 at halftime, but began the second half on a 12-4 run to take a 39-35 lead with 14:20 left to play.

American stretched its lead to 10 after consecutive 3-pointers from Moldoveanu, who scored 18 points after halftime.

The Mountaineers (3-9) trailed by at least three the rest of the way en route to their fifth straight loss.

The Eagles shot 52 percent from the floor (13 of 25) in the second half, including 5 for 8 from behind the arc (62.5 percent).

Lamar Trice scored 18 points, Shawn Atupem added 14 and Julian Norfleet 11 for Mount St. Mary’s.

Atupem nailed a jumper in the paint with 6 seconds left to pull the Mountaineers within 67-64. Moldoveanu hit two free throws to seal the victory for American.
