The Vancouver Police Activities League announced on Monday the receipt of a $25,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation.

The check will be presented during a board meeting at noon today at the police department’s headquarters, 605 E. Evergreen Blvd.

The grant was awarded as part of the Walmart State Giving Program and will be used to expand the Vancouver PAL Youth Environmental Stewardship program, which is designed to provide training in basic environmental sciences through hands-on projects. The environmental program is a partnership between the Vancouver PAL program and the Mount St. Helens Institute.

For eight months, 20 to 25 teens are drawn into the program from at-risk populations throughout Clark County. The program provides training in biology, stream science and habitat restoration.

The grant also will be used to enhance the program with field trips and bird-watching excursions.
