Prep roundup: Prairie girls reach final in Wyoming

Falcons will play Campbell County in Energy Classic

A string of 3-pointers sparked a big second quarter on Wednesday and sent the Prairie girls basketball team to a win in the semifinals of the Energy Classic tournament at Gillette, Wyo.

The Falcons defeated Lynwood, Calif., 70-47, to advance to the championship game. They will face host Campbell County for the title at 4:30 p.m. today.

Angela Gelhar led the way with 17 points. Gelhar and Meghan Lindsley combined to connect for five 3-pointers in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Prairie (7-0) outscored Lynwood 25-7 during the second quarter to gain the upper hand.

“It was a great team effort against a very good team,” Prairie coach Al Aldridge said. “We rebounded very well. That was one of the keys.”

Aldridge also said Prairie’s defensive pressure created easy baskets during the middle two quarters as the Falcons built a comfortable lead.

Heather Corral scored 14 points and Lindsley 12.

Skyview 57, Thurston 54, 2 OT — Brooke Bowen scored a game-high 22 points as the Storm won for the second day in a row at the Nike Interstate Shootout in Lake Oswego, Ore.

Skyview rallied for a 36-27 deficit after three quarters to force overtime at 47-47. Both teams scored two points each in the first overtime.

Aubrey Ward-El added 16 points for Skyview, and Delaney Keser had 11 against Thurston from Springfield, Ore.

Skyview will face South Eugene (Ore.) at 10 a.m. in the fifth-place game of the Swoosh Bracket of the tournament.

Evergreen 65, Tualatin 56 — Evergreen got its first victory at the Nike Intertstate Shootout in Lake Oswego, Ore., getting 17 points from freshman Jessica Chatman.

Evergreen had four players in double figures as Justin Joudrey added 16, Deja Nicholas had 13 and Shemerica Scott had 11.

Evergreen will face South Medford at 3:30 p.m. today in its first game in the tournament.

Boys basketball

Union 53, Community Charter 48 — Jordan Chatman scored 14 points and Kyle Holmes add 10 as Union pulled away to beat Community Charter of Los Angeles as the Titans concluded play in the Slalom Slam at Seattle Prep High School.

Battle Ground 71, Sir Winston Churchill 32 — The Tigers jumped out to a 28-3 lead after the first quarter and never looked back against the Bulldogs from Calgary, Alberta.

Battle Ground will face Bismark, N.D., in the consolation final of the Energy Classic in Gillette, Wyo., at 10:45 PDT today.

Serg Ovchinnikov (15 points) and Willie Bratcher (10) were the only Tigers to score in double figures as Battle Ground used balanced scoring to win. The Tigers made 16 of 17 free throws in the game.

Churchill 60, Skyview 47 — Anthony Chamberlain scored 18 points for the Storm, who fell behind early to the Lancers from Eugene, Ore., and couldn’t catch up.

Skyview, trailed 34-19 at halftime, will play North Eugene at 7 p.m. today to conclude play in the North Eugene Tournament.

Ridgefield 53, Riverside 40 — Sam Landerholm scored 19 points, and Michael Potter added 14 points and 10 rebounds as Ridgefield won its first game in the SunDome Shootout in Yakima.

Ridgefield will play Deer Park today at 1:30 p.m. in the Spudders’ second game in Yakima.
