WEST LINN, Ore. (AP) — A man at a Sunday afternoon barbecue along the Tualatin (too-WAH’-luh-tin) River at West Linn drowned after diving into the water.

The Clackamas County sheriff’s office says 35-year-old Jose Luis Cervantes Cortes of Veracruz, Mexico, tried to swim to the other shore, about 100 feet away, then started yelling for help.

Onlookers first thought he was joking. He sank into the water before friends could reach him.

Divers found the body about two hours later.
