WARRENTON, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon State Police says a Deer Island man on a Memorial Day clam digging trip with his son and grandsons has drowned.

The State Police says Edward James Koller got caught in the surf while on a sand bar near Fort Stevens State Park Monday and was pulled under water at about 10:35 a.m.

Koller’s son and two witnesses pulled him out of the water but found him unresponsive. They started CPR and called 911.

Paramedics, Warrenton Fire Department officials and an Oregon State trooper responded to the scene, where authorities continued with CPR.

The State Police says the 60-year-old Koller was transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria, where he was pronounced dead.
