LONDON (AP) — A rugby league captain has been given compassionate leave by his club after his brother, a former player, was one of 12 people shot dead by a taxi driver in northwest England.

The police revealed Thursday that 31-year-old Garry Purdham, who played for Workington and Whitehaven, was one of the victims of Derrick Bird, who went on a shooting rampage in the county of Cumbria. He was the brother of Harlequins rugby league captain Rob Purdham.

Rob Purdham played for England at the 2008 rugby league World Cup.
