ELKTON, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon National Guard platoon is helping to rebuild Fort Umpqua and restore a part of the history of the Coast Range town of Elkton.

Their goal is to recreate a granary storehouse similar to one originally built nearby in 1836.

The original fort operated until 1851 about a mile upstream from the location of the replica. It was the southernmost outpost of the Hudson’s Bay Company and was the first white settlement in Southern Oregon.

Elkton-area volunteers also hope to recreate three buildings inside the recently constructed stockade.
