GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — The Josephine County, Ore., sheriff’s office says a deputy shot and killed a Grants Pass man Wednesday after the man threatened to kill himself and also fired at the deputy.

A sheriff’s office statement says deputies went to the home of Vaughn Ronald Sanderson on Wednesday morning after a neighbor reported the resident had been drinking and threatening to shoot himself.

The statement says Sanderson ignored commands to put down his weapon and fired at a deputy, who returned fire in self-defense.

The deputy was not identified. Oregon State Police are investigating.
