REDMOND, Ore. (AP) — Burlington Northern Santa Fe is taking steps to improve rail safety following two train-related deaths in the Central Oregon city of Redmond.

The railroad has its own police force, and company spokesman Gus Melonas says it will soon travel with crews and drive along Central Oregon’s tracks to cut down on trespassing.

The railroad will also spend the next year educating local residents, primarily children, about the danger of crossing tracks illegally.

A 31-year-old homeless man was killed by a train in April and a 24-year-old man followed suit June 20.

The rail speed limit is 50 mph through Redmond. The average BNSF train in Central Oregon has up to three locomotives and 100 freight cars.
