Federer, Williams sisters into Wimbledon quarters

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Defending champions Roger Federer and Serena Williams have won in straight sets to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters have also reached the final eight.

Federer, chasing a record-tying seventh Wimbledon singles title, swept past 16th-seeded Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 on Monday.

Serena Williams beat former champion Maria Sharapova 7-6 (9) 6-4 in a rematch of the 2004 final won by the Russian. Williams served 19 aces for the second straight match.

Five-time champion Venus Williams overcame 92nd-ranked Jarmila Groth of Australia 6-4, 7-6 (5), and Clijsters rallied to beat Justine Henin 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in an all-Belgian match between former No. 1.-ranked players returning to Wimbledon after coming out of retirement.
