COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) — Port officials in Coos Bay say they still want to build a marine cargo terminal, but the poor economy means it will be at least seven years away.
Port spokesman Martin Callery tells The World newspaper that $60 million was available in 2007 to widen and deepen the channel to the Oregon coast city. But he says the port has to demonstrate the benefits of the project to move ahead.
The port had hoped to build a terminal by 2012 to attract some of the shipping traffic that was backing up in Southern California. But that need has vanished because of the recession. Callery says the port now hopes the project can take place between 2017 and 2020.
