BOSTON (AP) — Andy Pettitte will skip a start because of an elbow problem.
New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said before Friday night’s game against the Boston Red Sox that it’s in Pettitte’s and the team’s best interests that the left-hander miss his next regular outing even though he doesn’t want to.
Pettitte left his start against the Baltimore Orioles after five innings on Wednesday night and the Yankees went on to a 7-5 win in which they nearly squandered a five-run lead. An MRI showed mild inflammation in his left elbow after he felt stiffness above the elbow and in the back of his pitching arm.
The 37-year-old Pettitte is off to an outstanding start with a 4-0 record and a 2.08 ERA.
