WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — Hall of Fame electee Cynthia Cooper-Dyke has been named North Carolina-Wilmington’s women’s basketball coach.
UNC Wilmington announced Monday that Cooper-Dyke is leaving Prairie View after five seasons to replace Ann Hancock.
As a player, Cooper-Dyke won two NCAA titles at Southern California in the 1980s and a gold medal at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 before winning two WNBA MVP awards and the league’s first four championships before retiring in 2003. She will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in August.
She coached Prairie View to its only two NCAA tournaments in 2007 and 2009.
Athletic director Kelly Mehrtens says Cooper-Dyke “will elevate our women’s basketball program.”
