SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Savannah State’s defense came up big in the fourth quarter Saturday in a 28-21 win over North Carolina Central that snapped an 11-game losing streak.
Broderic Sellers recovered a fumble for the Tigers (1-9) early in the period after the Eagles (3-7) reached Savannah State’s 19. The Tigers’ ensuing possession ended with a punt, but they regained the ball when North Carolina Central fumbled and Mathew Smith recovered at the Eagles’ 40.
A botched Savannah State punt gave North Carolina Central the ball at the Tigers’ 11, but four plays lost 3 yards and gave the ball back to Savannah State.
The Eagles got one more try with 2:09 left and reached the Tigers’ 24 before three incompletions turned the ball back to Savannah State on downs.
Sheldon Barnes carried 19 times for 120 yards and Antonio Bostic threw two touchdown passes for Savannah State, which led 28-14 at halftime.
