INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Haimish Hy came from next-to-last at the top of the stretch to beat favorite Sebastian Flyte by a neck in the $250,000 Hollywood Derby on Sunday.
Ridden by Garrett Gomez, who was returning to Southern California after eight months in Kentucky and New York, Haimish Hy was last in the field of eight 3-year-olds in the early stages, moved up to seventh by the second turn and found room for the winning run on the outside, avoiding the traffic that snagged the favorite to take the Grade 1 victory.
Haimish Hy covered 114 miles on turf course in 2:01.20 and paid $25.80, $8.20 and $4.80. Sebastian Flyte returned $3.60 and $2.40, and Juniper Pass paid $3.80 to show.
