RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Hotel industry officials in Brazil say there won’t be a shortage of rooms in Rio de Janeiro during the 2016 Olympics.
The president of the Brazilian hotel association says there is a “favorable” trend in the creation of new hotel rooms before the games, thanks mostly to incentives from the city.
Alvaro Brito Bezerra de Mello told the O Globo newspaper Monday that 9,000 new hotel rooms have been announced since Rio was awarded the games last year.
A hotel shortage was one of the concerns of the International Olympic Committee before choosing Rio as the host city.
Mello says there will also be enough rooms in the city for the 2014 World Cup. Rio is expected to host the tournament’s final at Maracana stadium.
