El Salvador soccer player dies from gunshot wound

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) — A 19-year-old soccer player on El Salvador’s championship team has died two weeks after being shot in the head during an attack.

Nelson Rivera was injured when assailants shot at his vehicle in the east part of the country. He was traveling with two teammates who were unharmed. The three were returning to the capital Sept. 18. after for Isidro Metapan played a league game.

Club director Roberto Campos told The Associated Press that Rivera died Sunday night in intensive care after a series of operations to try to remove the bullet.

Rivera was a member of the under-20 national team chosen for a regional qualifier in December in Honduras.
