KELSO, Wash. (AP) — Kelso Police Capt. Vern Thompson says he’ll become chief of police in Eagle Point, Oregon, next month.

The 55-year-old Thompson tells The Daily News of Longview that the Eagle Point opportunity came up as the Kelso City Council was offering him early retirement. He’s a 28-year veteran of the Kelso force, working his way up from patrol officer.

Eagle Point, population 4,797, is north of Medford in southern Oregon. Thompson’s last day on the job in Kelso has not yet been set.
