PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office says a Redmond man accused of drunken driving struck a utility pole and knocked out power to more than 600 homes.

At about 4 a.m. on Saturday, police say 23-year-old Harold J. Matney drove a Ford pickup truck into the pole, which contained power, telephone and cable lines.

Witnesses reported an electrical burning odor and sparks from the pole, which was shattered into several pieces.

The Central Electric Cooperative says area residents were without power all morning.

Redmond is 15 miles northeast of Bend, Ore.
