HARRISON, N.J. (AP) — The New York Red Bulls tied defending MLS champion Real Salt Lake 0-0 to hold on to first place in the Eastern Conference.

The Red Bulls (14-8-6) were playing without starting goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul and midfielder Dane Richards, both away on international duty. They still controlled most of the action Saturday but couldn’t score through a strong Real defense.

Real Salt Lake (14-4-10) remained in second place in the Western Conference pending FC Dallas’ result with Colorado.

Real was the last team with .500 or better record the Red Bulls will play until the postseason.
