WASHINGTON (AP) — Chris Wondolowski scored twice and the San Jose Earthquakes moved closer to the first playoff appearance since their rebirth with a 2-0 victory over D.C. United on Saturday night.
The Earthquakes, who reformed in 2008 after the original team became the Houston Dynamo in 2006, needed a win and a Kansas City loss to clinch a playoff spot. Kansas City hosted Seattle later Saturday.
United (6-19-3) set a club record for defeats in a single season. They went 8-18-6 in 2000.
