VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — The family of a man who was shot and killed by a Vancouver police officer in 2007 is suing the city for more than $4 million.
The lawsuit filed in federal court in Tacoma says the death of 23-year-old Sean Makarowsky was unnecessary and unjustified. It was filed by Vancouver lawyer Beau Harlan on behalf of Makarowsky’s mother, Louise Gast of Eugene, Ore., and his daughter Emilee who lives in Camas.
The Columbian reports officers were serving a search warrant when they saw Makarowsky with a gun and fired. Police say they had knocked loudly and shouted warnings. The lawsuit says witnesses did not hear police announce themselves.
Assistant City Attorney Dan Lloyd says officers followed proper procedures.
