LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) — The owners and manager of an apartment complex in Longview are paying $12,500 to settle a federal complaint that they discriminated against families with children.

The Justice Department announced the settlement Thursday. Prosecutors alleged the Mountain View Apartments had a policy of refusing to rent to families with children in at least one of its seven buildings.

The Justice Department says it sent people pose as renters at the complex to gather information about possible discriminatory practices.

Seattle U.S. Attorney Jenny A. Durkan says she hopes the settlement serves as a warning to other property owners and managers not to discriminate against families with children.
