About half that amount expected to fall Monday

Did you get soaked on Sunday?

More than an inch of rain fell at Vancouver’s Pearson Field, said Clinton Rockey, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Portland. The number stood at 1.08 inches as of 9 p.m. Sunday.

“It was a good opening act for the winter,” Rockey said of Sunday’s storm.

Monday, he said to expect more rain but about half of the amount that pelted the region Sunday.

“We have reports of streets that look like rivers.” Rockey said.

Snow in the mountains delighted the manager of Mount Hood Meadows in Oregon.

“Mount Hood Meadows has received 9 inches of new snow since this early season storm arrived Sunday morning,” Dave Tragethon wrote in an e-mail sent at 4:33 p.m. Sunday.

He added more snow would be needed to open but remembered the ski area opened once in October in the past 16 years.

Rain and snow aren’t the only weather stars.

Big winds, 60 to 65 mph, have created big waves in the Pacific, Rockey noted.

He said winds on Sunday resulted in 38-foot waves at Buoy 5, which is 300 miles west of Astoria, Ore.

He said to expect 30- to 32-foot waves at daybreak on the northern Oregon and southern Washington coasts today.

“Definitely a good day to see big waves,” he said.
