BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Boise State and Michigan State will play a three-game series starting with the season opener for both teams in 2012.

Officials from both schools announced the deal Friday that also includes a game in Boise in 2022 and the final matchup in East Lansing, Mich., in 2023.

Adding a Big Ten team is a major step for a Boise State program looking to toughen the nonconference portion of its schedule. Next season, the Broncos are moving into the Mountain West Conference and will face more competitive teams like TCU and Air Force than those the Broncos now play in the Western Athletic Conference.

The Broncos are ranked No. 2 and the Spartans No. 5.

The first game is scheduled for Aug. 31, 2012, in East Lansing and will be broadcast by ESPN.
