Teachers strike: no classes Thursday in Ferndale

FERNDALE, Wash. (AP) — A strike by Ferndale teachers is extending students’ summer vacation for a second day. The Ferndale School District says no classes are planned Thursday.

Classes were scheduled to start Wednesday but teachers hit the picket line instead.

Ferndale Education Association President Tracie Morris says the main sticking point is more planning time for teachers.

Superintendent Linda Quinn says giving teachers the added time they want would require hiring four more teachers at a total cost of about $400,000 a year.

The district says the two sides will meet Thursday afternoon for more negotiations.

The district has about 300 teachers for 5,000 students at 11 schools.
