New bridges on Highway 12 at Tieton River

NACHES, Wash. (AP) — After more than a year of construction, the state Transportation Department is finishing a $12 million project to replace two old bridges on Highway 12 at the Tieton (TY’-uh-tuhn) River west of Naches (na-CHEEZ’).

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports the old bridges built in 1933 were only 24 feet wide and were a tight fit for drivers meeting large trucks on the spans.

The highway carries traffic over White Pass and is a backup route for cross-state traffic if I-90 is closed during the winter at Snoqualmie Pass.
