MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin punt returner David Gilreath was taken off the field on a stretcher after he appeared to get knocked out on a tackle early in the third quarter Saturday.

Gilreath fielded a punt and was met by San Jose State’s Peyton Thompson, who wrapped him up from the front. As he was being stood up on the tackle, Dominique Hunsucker hit Gilreath hard from behind and appeared to make helmet-to-helmet contact.

The school said Gilreath sustained a concussion, and he did not appear to move when being loaded onto the stretcher. A woman wearing a No. 85 T-shirt came out from the crowd as Gilreath was put on a backboard and transported off the field by ambulance.

Gilreath has been Wisconsin’s primary return specialist since his freshman year.
