ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon was ejected from Wednesday night’s game against the New York Yankees after arguing that a hit by pitch call in the seventh inning was incorrect.

Plate umpire Lance Barksdale ruled that New York’s Derek Jeter was hit by reliever Chad Qualls pitch. After the call, Maddon left the dugout and argued with Barksdale before leaving the plate area and continuing his discussion with second base umpire and crew chief Tom Hallion behind the mound.

Maddon later headed back and argued again with Barksdale, who threw the manager out of the game.

TV replays showed the ball might have hit Jeter’s bat.

The next batter, Curtis Granderson, hit a two-run homer that put New York ahead 3-2.
