HOUSTON (AP) — Top-seeded Mardy Fish of the United States beat Albert Ramos of Spain 6-3, 6-4 Thursday night to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Clay Court Championships.
Fish dominated most of the match and was leading 5-1 in the second set when Ramos made a charge. Ramos held in the seventh and broke Fish in the eighth game on the fourth break point.
Ramos held in the ninth game after escaping one break point to pull to 5-4. However, Fish finally put the match away after escaping two break points in the 10th game.
Third-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain, sixth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan and seventh-seeded pablo Cuevas of Uruguay also advanced to the quarterfinals.
