ARLINGTON, Wash. (AP) — Arbor Day has a new tune in Arlington this year. Famed Seattle rock band Pearl Jam is paying for trees to be planted along the Stillaguamish River.
City natural resources manager Bill Blake says he received an email from rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard seven weeks ago, asking if the band could donate money for tree-planting to offset the environmental effects of touring.
Blake’s reply was quick and simple: “Yes, please.”
Pearl Jam gave $8,000 to buy more than 500 native shrubs and trees that were being planted in a new park by volunteers on Arbor Day Saturday. The plants are expected to help improve river conditions for salmon and protect the new park from flooding damage.
