VERSAILLES, Ky. (AP) — A.P. Indy, the 1992 Horse of the Year and one of the industry’s top stallions, has been retired by Lane’s End Farm.
The decision came the 22-year-old stallion failed to produce a confirmed foal after breeding with 25 mares this spring. The farm says A.P. Indy suffers from testicular degeneration disease but is otherwise in good health.
A.P. Indy won the Belmont Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 1992 to win Horse of the Year, before embarking on one of the most successful stallion careers in racing history.
He was the leading sire in 2003 and 2006 and notable offspring include Mineshaft, 2006 Preakness winner Bernardini and 2007 Belmont winner Rags To Riches.
Farm owner Will Farish says A.P. Indy will remain in his stall at the farm indefinitely.
