SALEM, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon congressman under fire after losing seven staff members is reporting his strongest first-quarter fundraising haul in eight years.
A spokesman for Oregon Democrat David Wu said Thursday that the seven-term congressman raised just over $219,000 between January 1 and March 31 this year.
The fundraising occurred amid a series of media reports about Wu’s erratic behavior during the 2010 campaign. Wu has acknowledged taking an unknown painkiller from a campaign donor despite an allergy to an enzyme combination found in many drugs.
He’s apologized for “inappropriate” behavior that he says contributed to staff resignations.
A Wu spokesman says the congressman has about $173,000 in the bank. Wu’s fundraising total is his highest for the first quarter of an odd-numbered year since 2003, when he raised just under $228,000.
