BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) — It may be mid-April but many Whatcom County residents woke up to snow.

The Bellingham Herald reports that as much as 1 1/2 inches of slushy snow accumulated early Thursday, then quickly melted.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary says his agency responded to a half dozen collisions after the snow began to fall but no injuries were reported.

While the lowland snowfall is later than average, National Weather Service meteorologist Danny Mercer says it’s “not totally unusual” for Western Washington. In Seattle, he says trace amounts of snow have been reported as late as April 18 and 19.

Bellingham had a spring snowfall on April 20, 2008.

The Washington Transportation Department has granted drivers a third extension of the state’s studded tire season, noting heavy April snowfall in Washington’s mountain passes. Drivers have through April 25 to remove their studded tires.
