SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Democrats in the Oregon House have introduced two bills that would dig deeper into savings to pay for schools and other programs.
The bills were introduced Thursday by Reps. Val Hoyle of Eugene and Margaret Doherty of Tigard. One bill would boost school funding using $100 million from a savings account known as the Education Stability Fund. That money would be in addition to $100 million from the same acount that lawmakers approved on Wednesday.
Schools say more money is needed to minimize the need to lay off teachers and shorten school years.
A second bill draws on $75 million from the Rainy Day Fund to pay for social services and police.
The bills have support from 26 Democrats. Republican Rep. Greg Smith has signed on to the education bill.
