VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — A National Park Service orchardist has been trying to save the historic Old Apple Tree in Vancouver.

The tree sprouted from an apple seed in 1825, making it a living link to the Hudson’s Bay Company era.

The Columbian reports the tree was damage in 2009 when two of three main limbs snapped, creating cavities in the trunk.

Orchardist Laurie Thompson from Lake Chelan tried some grafts a year ago and was back Tuesday, grafting twigs onto the trunk. She hopes they’ll grow into a better path for nutrients to reach the upper portions of the tree.
