Rossi’s 29th goal lifts Villarreal over Zaragoza

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Giuseppe Rossi converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute for his 29th goal of the season, leading Villarreal over Zaragoza 1-0 Monday night.

Rossi had been pulled down by Ponzio Leonardo in the penalty area. The New Jersey-born forward has 16 league goals, tied for third with Athletic Bilbao behind Barcelona’s Lionel Messi (30), Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo (29) and Barcelona’s David Villa. Rossi also has 10 goals in the Europa League and three in the Copa del Rey.

Villarreal (17-9-6) is fourth with 57 points, nine ahead of Bilbao for the final Champions League berth next season.
