PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The remains of a man and woman found earlier this month in the brush off a trail at Cape Perpetua on the Oregon coast were a missing fugitive from the Eugene area and his girlfriend.

The Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office said Wednesday it had positively identified the remains as 31-year-old Nathan Dix and his girlfriend, 31-year-old Annie Jo Welch.

The state Medical Examiner, Dr. Karen Gunson, said Dix and Welch both died from gunshot wounds to the head. She said Dix’s wound was self-inflicted, but the manner of death for Welch is undetermined.

Oregon State Police said Dix failed to appear in Lane County Circuit Court on Dec. 29, 2008, following his indictment by a Lane County grand jury on attempted murder and weapons charges.
