EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — An investigator with the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office has resigned amid allegations he stole drugs seized in death probes.

The Herald of Everett says the 35-year-old man has not been arrested. He was placed on administrative earlier this month and resigned April 15.

Detectives forwarded the case to prosecutors for possible criminal charges, including drug possession and official misconduct.

Police records show the man took a six-week leave of absence from work to undergo treatment in California for substance abuse. Later, employees conducting an inventory of controlled drugs seized in cases and discovered an evidence envelope had been opened and resealed. The investigator was supposed to have delivered that envelope to the sheriff’s office to be destroyed.
