NEW YORK (AP) — Colorado Rapids midfielder Brian Mullan has been suspended 10 games and fined $5,000 for his tackle on Seattle’s Steve Zakuani that resulted in a broken right leg.
Major League Soccer announced the additional discipline on Thursday. The length of the suspension includes the automatic one-game suspension Mullan receives for being issued a red card.
The Rapids say Mullan will not to appeal his suspension.
The foul occurred in last Friday’s match when Mullan barged into Zakuani near the sideline. Zakuani’s right leg was caught underneath him, breaking his tibia and fibula. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and had surgery at Rose Medical Center in Denver. Zakuani returned to Seattle Tuesday night.
Mullan issued an apology on Wednesday.
