PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Portland city council will hold a public hearing on Thursday afternoon concerning the idea of rejoining a federal terrorism task force which civil-rights advocates say could force Portland police officers to break Oregon laws against religious and ethnic profiling.
On Tuesday, Portland mayor Sam Adams released a draft of his proposal that he says meets the criteria of civil-rights advocates and those in law enforcement.
Portland became the first U.S. city to pull out of the Joint Terrorism Task Force in April 2005.
The issue of rejoining the task force took on prominence after the November arrest of a Somali-born Oregon teen who was charged with plotting to set off a bomb at an annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
