VANTAGE, Wash. (AP) — The Yakama Nation plans to release its first hatchery-raised sturgeon into the Columbia River.

The tribe will hold a ceremony at noon Thursday near Wanapum Dam to release the fish. Speakers include members of the Yakama Nation, the Wanapum Band of Priest Rapids and a representative of the Grant County Public Utility District.

Like salmon, sturgeon are migratory fish that hatch in rivers and live in the ocean before returning to spawn. The prehistoric fish can live to be 100 years old.
