SEATTLE (AP) — The city of Seattle is paying $1.5 million to the family of a woodcarver who was shot by a police officer last summer.

Officer Ian Birk shot Native American John T. Williams last August after the woodcarver crossed the street in front of Birk’s patrol car while holding a small knife. The police department’s firearms review board ruled the shooting unjustified, and Birk has resigned.

The Seattle City Attorney’s Office said Friday it will pay part of the settlement to Williams’ mother, and part will be held in escrow for his estate.

In a written statement, Williams’ brother, Rick, says the settlement is a step toward justice.

The U.S. Justice Department is conducting a top-to-bottom review of the Seattle Police in response to the killing and other episodes of force used against minorities. It’s also examining whether Birk should face federal charges.
