Vollmer wins women’s 100 butterfly

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Dana Vollmer won the women’s 100-meter butterfly at U.S. nationals.

Vollmer won the world championship in the event last week in Shanghai before adding the U.S. title on Tuesday night on the opening day of competition at nationals.

Vollmer trailed at the turn to Claire Donahue before outracing her to the finish in 57.26 seconds. Donahue came in second at 58.05 and Elaine Breeden was third at 58.60.

Earlier in the day, Ryan Lochte failed to qualify for the finals in the 100 breaststroke. Lochte finished 24th in the preliminary heats just days after wrapping up a stellar performance at the world championships in China. Lochte won five gold medals and a bronze at worlds.
