SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Cam Newton found a new way to wow the Carolina Panthers’ fans at practice on Wednesday night.
The team’s No. 1 draft choice laid a big block on cornerback R.J. Stanford on a play during contact drills, drawing applause and “ooohs” from those watching practice. It also drew a couple of shouts from Carolina defensive coaches. The 6-foot-5, 248-pound Newton has worn the quarterback’s red jersey that keeps him free of heavy contact. Newton walked back to the huddle with his hands up after hitting Stanford, then before the next play ran over to smooth things over with 2nd year defensive back.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Newton may have gotten overly excited during the drill, but showed teammates he’s willing to do whatever he can to help them succeed.
